In a world where human trafficking is a billion-dollar industry, the daring efforts of one jungle animal have captured people’s imaginations and given new meaning to the word “rescue.” In 2006, a four-year-old female Asian elephant named Puli was rescued from servitude in a logging camp in Thailand. For 10 years, she lived alone in Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary until she was translocated to her present home at Ban Ta Khun elephant camp in 2009, where she joined an unrelated male elephant called Yongki. The two quickly forged an intimate bond built on trust and mutual respect. However, the bond was soon broken when Yongki accused Puli of betraying him by consorting with their human caretakers. As a result, the elephant returned to the forests of Thailand where she lives on her own until he is released back into the wild. Puli was born in Thailand in 2006 and was separated from her mother shortly after birth. She was taken to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai Province where she lived alone for over ten years before being rescued. She spent her days foraging at low branches in the forest, searching out food like tree leaves and bamboo shoots when she wasn’t exploring her surroundings or playing with other elephants. She was tame and gentle, and acted as the elephant ambassador to the villagers who visit her daily. She was cared for by a small team of dedicated volunteers at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Elephant Care Center in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Though she was still young by elephant standards, not much else is known about her because she was isolated. We do know that she is very friendly and likes to play, but she also likes to be left alone when it’s quiet because that’s when she can be most comfortable. When it comes to humans, though, she seems curious and easily led into the forest where people are usually prevented from entering. Her new life began in Laos in August 2009 when she was rescued with her older companion, Yongki, and transported to the Ban Ta Khun elephant camp at the edge of the dense forests in Phonsavan. While in Laos, she received daily care and lots of affection from caretakers and other elephants at the camp and was soon reunited with her long lost friend Yongki who was also rescued from a logging camp. The pair quickly formed an intimate bond built on trust and mutual respect. However, the bond was broken when Yongki accused Puli of betraying him by consorting with their human caretakers. He fled into the forest, but was soon found by the camp veterinarians who tranquilized him for transport back to Thailand to rejoin Puli. Puli remained in the forest with no one but Yongki or human caretakers to keep her company. She was left on her own until he was released back into the wild, giving her plenty of time to reflect on what happened. However, she soon got another chance at finding happiness when she met another rescued male elephant named Moo Saa (also known as Moo Saw) who came from a logging camp in the same region that she was rescued from. She and Moo Saa quickly formed an intimate bond built on trust and mutual respect.
